He was just a child, but already living on the streets.

The First Loan: A Small Start

With his first interest-free loan, Ibrahima purchased a bundle of used clothing. He laid the garments out each morning on a plastic tarp along a busy street in Saint-Louis.

He observed other vendors. He learned how to greet customers and build rapport. His discipline and consistency began to generate a steady income.

He repaid his first loan in full.

That repayment made the same funds available for another entrepreneur. This is the core strength of sustainable microfinance in Senegal.

The Second Loan: Growth and Expansion

With a second microfinance loan, Ibrahima expanded his inventory.

More inventory meant more responsibility. Every morning, he displayed hundreds of items. Every evening, he packed everything away to keep it safe.

He dreamed of owning a permanent storefront.

With additional entrepreneurial training and Ibrahima’s demonstrated reliability in repaying loans, he qualified for a third loan.

Building a Boutique in Saint-Louis

Ibrahima stands inside the boutique that he repaired and remodeled, then, with his third microfinance loan, stocked with new and used clothing. He speaks in Wolof, but his confidence and pride tell the story clearly.

Ibrahima located a small building in a high pedestrian traffic area of Saint-Louis. The structure needed repairs, but the landlord could not afford renovations.

Ibrahima proposed an agreement. He would repair the roof, re-tile the floor, and repaint the interior in exchange for reduced rent.

After completing the work himself, he received a third microfinance loan, which was needed to stock and open his boutique.

Today, he operates a functioning clothing store in Saint-Louis, Senegal. Ibrahima’s boutique represents stability, dignity, and economic independence.

In Saint-Louis, hope is reborn every day

Mothers and fathers rebuild their lives thanks to microfinance, young talibés* discover their strengths through training, sports, and education, and donors and volunteers lend a helping hand with compassion.

*Talibé are children, often as young as 5 years old, who are sent to live in daaras, so-called spiritual learning centers which are often woefully inadequate in providing for the needs of the children. Often children are abused by the daara leader and run away to live abandoned and alone on the streets of the city.

Zero-interest microfinance loans

The Friends of Senegal (FOS) and Maison de la Gare (MDG) microfinance program sows the seeds of independence. It is a pillar of our work, enabling vulnerable families excluded from the traditional banking system to access small loans to start income-generating activities.

Increased income changes everything in a family, from the food they eat to educational opportunities for children to the physical health of each member. A life that was once a mere existence becomes a life filled with joy, pride, and hope.

The literacy program: opening the doors to knowledge

Every day, we welcome children to learn to read, write, and dream. The literacy program offers French and English lessons. We believe that every word learned is a step toward freedom and dignity.

Every afternoon, our center welcomes older talibés for English classes tailored to their level.

Thanks to our volunteers, young talibés discover confidence and hope through language. These learning moments are a gateway to a larger world, a way to give them confidence and feed their curiosity. Learning to say “hello” or “my name is” becomes a powerful symbol: one of openness, progress, and regained dignity. These classes allow young people to broaden their horizons, communicate better, and believe that a different future is possible.

Vocational training: give a future to motivated young men and women

A young talibé from Saint-Louis learns the basics of agriculture through the vocational training program.

Thanks to our training program in agriculture and poultry farming, young talibés and teenagers acquire practical skills to build their future.

These training courses open the doors to employment and independence. We are also working to set up workshops on leadership, emotional support, inner well-being, and social integration, in order to give them confidence in their potential.

Healing through play: recreational activities to restore hope to talibé children in Saint-Louis

Every afternoon, the center echoes with laughter and music.

We organize games, workshops, and creative activities to allow children to relax, express their emotions, and rediscover the joy of simply being… children.

On Thursdays and Fridays, even more people come to the center to share these moments of collective happiness.

Sports: a tool for cohesion and hope

Every week, our sports activities bring children and young people together for matches, team games, and moments of sharing. Sports strengthen team spirit, discipline, and solidarity.

For these young children, running, playing, or scoring a goal is much more than a game: it is a way to feel free, valued, and alive.

Children’s snack time: a moment of joy and sharing

Every afternoon, after classes and activities, we offer the children a snack.

This moment, simple in appearance, is often one of the most eagerly awaited times of the day.

A glass of milk, a piece of bread, or a few cookies become a symbol of love and kindness.

This solidarity snack, as we call it, helps improve children’s diets and well-being, while providing them with an opportunity for interaction, laughter, and friendship.
Because a full stomach also helps children learn and dream of what they might become.

Patrols and support: reaching out to street children

Every Monday and Wednesday evening, our teams patrol the streets of Saint-Louis to locate children living on the streets. 

We listen to them and offer the protection and support of our center. They are often wary of adults, but few refuse help. 

There, they receive psychosocial support, care, and assistance with family reintegration when possible.

This is often the first step toward a new life.

Medical care and support

Our volunteers care for talibé children in the daaras of Saint-Louis, united by the belief that every act of care can change a life. We also welcome injured or sick talibé children to our infirmary, provide them with first aid, and, when necessary, refer them to appropriate medical facilities.

But beyond treatment, there is the tenderness of a gesture, the gentleness of a glance, the warmth of a hand.

The Strength Within Her Heart

Behind every home and every family standing tall, there is a woman. She carries invisible burdens, faces daily challenges, and yet keeps moving forward with courage and dignity.  

Friends of Senegal, in partnership with Maison de la Gare, opens doors to hope and independence, transforming lives, especially for women who have too often been seen only as housewives. Today, these women are demonstrating their strength, resilience, and vital role in building stronger families and communities.

Arame: From Homemaker to Entrepreneur

Arame Diop, a woman entrepreneur in Senegal, is a microcredit beneficiary in Saint-Louis

For years, Arame Diop believed her only mission was to remain at home, as she had always been told. But her husband struggled to find regular work, and her children needed food and schooling. So Arame made a decision that would change her family’s future: she stepped out of the shadows to fight for a better life.

“I started modestly, buying fish at the dock and reselling it at the market,” Arame recalls. “It wasn’t easy, but with persistence, I managed to ensure at least one meal a day for my children. I wake up very early every morning to earn a living, while also managing my household duties. It’s difficult, but it gives me pride and strength.”

That kind of daily courage makes women like Arame the true pillars of their families.

Today, her story looks very different.

“I now run my own food stand where I sell a variety of products. I provide not only food and education for my children, but I’ve also become a role model for my daughters. Through my journey, I teach them that being a woman doesn’t mean relying on others; it means believing in yourself and working with dignity. None of this would have been possible without the support of Friends of Senegal (FOS-MDG). By giving women like me access to funding, FOS-MDG helped me expand my business and rebuild my confidence.”

The Promise of Microfinance

Microfinance has long been celebrated as a tool for poverty reduction, but for women like Arame, it means something more profound: the chance to reclaim agency and self-worth.

In Senegal, women reinvest up to 90% of their earnings back into their families, primarily in food, education, and healthcare (World Bank Gender Data Portal, 2024).

The Challenges Women Still Face

Despite progress, the path to empowerment in Senegal remains complex.

While women have the same legal rights as men, gender gaps persist. In 2024, women’s labor-force participation was 37.2% compared with 63.5% for men (World Bank Gender Data Portal).. Cultural norms, including early marriage and widespread poverty, still prevent many girls from completing their education. Nearly 60% of women in Senegal are illiterate, according to the Alliance for Financial Inclusion (2024). This lack of foundational education limits women’s economic opportunities and constrains their ability to start and sustain businesses.

Access to financial resources remains especially low. Only 8.17% of women in Senegal hold a bank account, while just 4.34% report earning more than their partner. Likewise, only 13.38% and 13.66% of women say they participate in household financial decisions such as major purchases or income management (ScienceDirect, 2025).

But this is exactly what Friends of Senegal is working to change, by providing interest-free microfinance loans and training that allow women to gain financial independence with dignity.

Senegalese women are not waiting for change to arrive; they are creating it, even though they must skillfully balance family obligations, faith, and economic ambition by:

• Framing their businesses as contributions to the household rather than acts of independence.
• Involving husbands and relatives in loan decisions to maintain family harmony.
• Choosing home-based enterprises, like tailoring or food production, that align with community expectations.
• Forming women’s savings groups and solidarity networks to lift one another up.

This daily balancing act, between duty and dreams, is invisible labor, yet it is the foundation upon which families and communities thrive.

Volunteering Abroad: Criticisms, Dilemmas, and How Friends of Senegal Does It Differently

The Promise and the Problem

Volunteering abroad sounds noble. You travel, help a community, and come back changed, feeling like a world citizen. For many, it’s a first step toward a career in international development or social impact.

But over the past decade, a growing chorus of journalists, academics, and former volunteers has pointed out the dark side of “voluntourism”, programs that combine travel with volunteer work. When poorly designed, they can do more harm than good.

At Friends of Senegal, we welcome this debate. It keeps us focused and helps us ensure that our programs truly empower individuals and communities. Let’s look at the main criticisms, then at how our model is different.

Five Real Problems With Volunteering Abroad

1. Poverty Profiteering

Many “volunteer” programs operate more like travel companies. They charge thousands of dollars, but very little of that money reaches local people. Instead, profits enrich the owners of the company that promotes the volunteer programs. Community projects become nothing more than a backdrop for a tourist experience, rather than an effort to truly provide assistance to a developing country.

2. “Orphanage” Programs That Exploit Children

In some countries, so-called “orphanages” actually pay financially desperate parents to allow their children to be boarded away from home, posing as “orphans”, in order to meet volunteer demand. Unsuspecting volunteers feel that they are being helpful to these children, but in fact, both the child and the volunteer are being horribly used for the financial benefit of the company and its owners. To make matters even worse, children form emotional attachment to the short-term volunteers, only to be abandoned over and over again, often causing lasting trauma to the child.

3. Skills Mismatch and Safety Issues

Sending skilled construction workers, or experienced farmers, for example, to a third-world country for an extended stay to work alongside locals can be very productive for both the volunteer and the local community. However, sending young students with no training to build schools, teach, or provide medical care can be a drain on a community in real need of assistance. Without proper supervision or skill matching, volunteers can undercut local workers or leave unsafe infrastructure behind.

4. Short-Termism and Superficial Impact

Two-week or “gap year” trips often deliver more benefits for the volunteer than for the community they are sent to. Projects are often started and quickly abandoned, relationships are shallow, and the needs of locals go unmet. Having very young students participate in such volunteer projects is often pushed by well-meaning parents who want to ensure that their child’s resumé will meet the requirements of colleges and universities that the child will eventually apply to for admission, but the harm done to communities in economically struggling countries is overlooked.

5. Neo-Colonial and “White Savior” Dynamics

Some programs frame Westerners as “rescuers” rather than equals. Rescuers feel inherently superior to those they want to save, an attitude that is immediately perceived by the individuals in the community being “helped.” This attitude of superiority is most often felt by religiously oriented organizations, but it can also be a problem in other organizations. If local individuals consciously or unconsciously buy into the volunteer’s attitude of superiority, they can be left feeling worse about themselves and their abilities than before the volunteer arrived. Such volunteers often leave communities feeling dependent on external “solutions”, rather than feeling better about themselves and what they are capable of doing. A critical question that all potential volunteers should ask themselves: Does the work of the volunteer organization that they are considering focus on the volunteer, or on the community in which they are working?

These aren’t fringe complaints. They’re reminders to ask hard questions:

• Who designed this program?
• Who really benefits?
• Are volunteers qualified?
• Is there long-term follow-up?

How Friends of Senegal Does It Differently

At Friends of Senegal, we don’t place unskilled volunteers into sensitive roles. We don’t run orphanages. We don’t profit from poverty. Instead, our model puts the dignity and self-sufficiency of the individuals in the community that we serve at the center of our work.

Community-Led Design: We partner with Maison de la Gare (MDG), a fully vetted and registered Senegalese NGO. All of our work supports the local managers of MDG and the people they serve. Both Friends of Senegal and Maison de la Gare are dedicated to helping local communities. 

Skills-Based Contributions: Volunteers bring specific expertise in business, communications,  education, sports, teaching, and other skills, and always work alongside local professionals.

Zero-Interest Microloans and Training: Friends of Senegal and Maison de la Gare are not in business to earn a profit. We help entrepreneurs build sustainable businesses. Our volunteers teach, mentor, and most of all, listen to our clients and their needs and dreams. 

Transparency and Evaluation: We measure impact for both volunteers and participants. Our goal is mutual benefit and lasting relationships.                  

Behind every loan, there is a story. This is the story of Ousseynou Ka, who lost everything trying to reach Europe, then regained hope thanks to the support of FOS and the respect of a volunteer. His journey reminds us that helping is not only about financing, it’s about restoring confidence and dignity.

“FOS gave me back my life.”

“My name is Ousseynou Ka. I sell second-hand clothes in Saint-Louis, a very common activity in Senegal.

After my father passed away, I left my region of Kaolack to look for work. I started with almost nothing, selling various  items on the streets,and little by little began to create a business. 

In 2015, I was able to establish my own kiosk, and my business was thriving. I had found my place until everything changed: when the COVID pandemic hit and business got worse, I sold my belongings to attempt the journey by a small  boat to Europe. My dream failed, and I lost everything. At that point, I had nothing left, no money, no hope.

Thanks to the support of FOS, I was able to buy my first bundle of second-hand clothes and start again with dignity. But what touched me most was not the money; it was the respectful way a volunteer looked at me.

He told me I was a courageous, dignified, and persistent man, capable of continuing to support my family despite the hardships. ‘You keep moving forward, and that is a real strength, ’ he said. Those words deeply moved me, because for the first time, I didn’t feel like just a recipient, but like a man of worth and respect.

In our conversations, I felt listened to, encouraged, and seen as someone with value. That mattered as much as the loan itself, because I had lost all hope.”

In that moment, Ousseynou became convinced he had knocked on the right door. He felt recognized, understood, and supported, not as someone receiving, but as a partner building his future.

“Today, I run my shop thanks to a second loan, and I can truly say that FOS has restored my confidence and dignity. Most importantly, I can help my family live better. When you respect the people you help, they feel it deeply.”
